As I scan the online and offline news platforms in Gujarat, news of civic body polls rules the headlines and Gujarat has already jumped into local poll season with Junagadh Municipal Corporation and 66 municipalities to vote on February 16.

Gujarat Government equally gears for the State budget session from February 19; 27 sittings likely over 26 days, The secretariat of Gujarat Assembly issued a notification in this regard after Governor Acharya Devvrat summoned the Assembly session. 

Alongwith Local civic body polls, Olympic fever is also gripping the state, as state gears to host 1st Olympic Research Conference, to debate on economics of hosting Olympics in India, while on the flip side, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel inaugurates Oxygen park in Ahmedabad.

Amidst all the juxtaposing developments from Olympics to Oxygen park, in a shocking incident, deaths due to asphyxiation are yet reported from the progressive and (already) developed state of Gujarat, as Two workers died allegedly of asphyxiation after they were trapped in an underground sewage pumping station they had entered to clean in Patdi town of Gujarat's Surendranagar district on Tuesday.

As reports surface of Gujarat government having ‘demolished illegal structures’ from 7 islands in Devbhoomi Dwarka District, where the structures are believed to have come up in the last five to ten years on the prohibited islands, which can be accessed only with due permission from the district or forest department.

Study cites remote sensing data to 'locate' ancient Valabhi town in Gujarat, university dating back to 300 CE. The study, authored by Arya S Pradeep and MB Rajani of the Bengaluru-based National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS), was carried out with remote sensing data and geospatial analyses.

While in another development Gujarat High Court issues notice to Gujarat government on plea over quota in promotions for persons with disabilities Justice Aniruddha P Mayee issued the notice to the respondent, the state government, and directed it to file an affidavit-in-reply before the next date of hearing.

In a 2004 corruption case, Former Gujarat IAS officer Pradeep Sharma convicted, sentenced to 5 years in jail. This is the first major case in which the former IAS officer, who was at loggerheads with the Gujarat government during Narendra Modi's tenure as Chief Minister of the state, has been convicted and sentenced. He is facing nearly a dozen FIRs, all related to corruption.

While in other developments, Justice Sandeep N Bhatt of the Gujarat High Court on Tuesday (January 21) recused from hearing a plea by journalist Mahesh Langa seeking quashing of an FIR registered against him for alleged corruption, criminal conspiracy and theft where he is accused of obtaining "highly confidential government documents". When the matter was taken up for the hearing, Justice Bhatt orally said, “Not before me.”

In an interesting positive development, Gujarat Doctor performed complex uterine surgery denied thrice by London Surgeons, Dr K P Gadhvi in Junagadh performed the laparoscopic surgery in just 90 minutes, the Non-Resident Indian patient who arrived on a one-month visa, recovered well and started walking in just three days!

On business news front, The Indian Hotels Company Ltd (IHCL) has revealed plans to open a new hotel in Surat (Gujarat) under Vivanta Brand of the Tata Taj Group.

While another Tata Group venture, Air India is making it easier to reach Bhuj by launching daily flights between Delhi and Bhuj starting from February 1st 2025, the airline’s A320 aircraft will offer passenger a full-service option to travel comfortably to and from Bhuj.

While in an exciting development on eVTOL (Electric Vehicle Take-Off and Landing) Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat have emerged as front runners for ‘regulatory sandbox’ locations, such locations for eVTOL will speed-up the testing and standardisation of such aircrafts.

In developments from Indian Bourses for news related to Gujarat, State Government’s Fertilizer and Chemicals manufacturing arm, Gujarat Narmada Valley Fertilizers & Chemicals’ five-year earnings growth trails the stellar shareholder returns, reports Simply Wall St.

It seems the chemical manufacturing sector in the state has a good day as Dhanuka Agritech acquires global rights for two Bayer fungicides for 1.65 billion (~165 crore) rupees and the company plans to shift its manufacturing of Iprovalicarb to its Dahej facility within the next 2-3 years to improve cost efficiency.

In an interesting development in maritime sector, especially from shipbuilding industry, while India’s largest shipyard Swan Defence & Heavy Industries relists on national bourses, New owner aims to turn facility into one of the world’s top shipbuilders. The new owners of India’s largest shipyard relisted it on major bourses on 20 January. The yard, previously known as Reliance Naval & Engineering and Pipavav Shipyard, also formally announced its name change to Swan Defence & Heavy Industries. The shares resumed trading on the National Stock Exchange and the Bombay Stock Exchange, opening at INR 35.99 ($0.42) before closing 5% higher at INR 37.78.

Global shipping giant MSC explores India for shipbuilding and repair opportunities, the world’s largest container shipping line, Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has initiated preliminary discussions with India’s Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways to identify suitable greenfield site for developing a shipyard and the company has engaged with Swan Defence and Heavy Industries Ltd, for potential collaboration in areas of shipbuilding and repairs at the company’s yard in Pipavav (Gujarat), Indian Shipping News reported the matter quoting senior government official on condition of anonymity.

Amidst above developments in Maritime sector of the nation, India keen to collaborate with South Korea to expand shipbuilding capacity and how centre is seeking to unlock India’s maritime development potential, while Gujarat charts news course with coastal shipping policy, Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB) workshop highlighted Gujarat’s significant role in India’s coastal shipping sector with its 49 ports managing 19% of the nation’s coastal cargo.

Whereas DEE Development Engineers’ shares jump on partly commissioning 2.5 billion (~250 crore) rupees Gujarat unit,  shares of the company advanced 5.06% to Rs 315.55 after the firm commissioned 2nd phase of its manufacturing plant in Anjar, Gujarat, enhancing the capacity by 9,000 MT per annum. The facilitys total operational capacity now stands to 12,000 MT per annum and it shall primarily cater to the jobs of oil and gas piping sector, while DEV IT share price zooms 7% after securing project from Gujarat Metro Rail, DEV Information Technology (IT) share price jumped 6.62 per cent at Rs 649.90 a piece on the BSE in Tuesday's intraday trade.

In few interesting developments from Gandhinagar, Gujarat Government allocates 6.05 billion (~605.48 crore) rupees for urban development projects, the state government has also received more than 7,200 applications regarding suggestions for Circle (Jantri) Rates and GIFT (Gujarat International Finance Tec) City is buzzing with activities and developments, where the 440 years old Edinburgh University Scotland will soon collaborate with biotech and pharma industries in Gujarat, in addition to tie-ups with fintech at the GIFT City, The Gujarat Biotechnology University (GBU) in its third year of establishment partnership, is a flagship project of the University of Edinburgh in India, working closely with the Department of Science and Technology, Government of Gujarat.

The Gujarat Government’s energy arm, Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd (GUVNL) has invited bids to set-up 500MW / 1,000MWh standalone battery energy storage systems (BESS) under tariff-based competitive bidding (Phase VI), of which the last day to submit the bids is February 24th, 2025 and the Bids will be opened on February 28th, 2025.
