A Big Hello and Greetings - Readers and Viewers,

Today is TUESDAY, 22nd APRIL 2025, and here we go with our THE #DLG+2 DISPATCH / THE DATELINE GUJARAT DISPATCH - THE INDIA STORY section ... the nation is clearly mourning the terror attack at Pahalgam where tourists were killed by terrorists in Jammu & Kashmir, but as i scan the headlines from Indian Sub-continent, what i read is that  A Week of Tensions, Diplomacy, and Decisive Action

India finds itself at a critical juncture this week, grappling with the aftermath of a horrific terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, while simultaneously navigating diplomatic engagements and domestic developments.
The brutal attack, which claimed 26 lives, mostly tourists, has not only plunged the nation into mourning but also triggered a series of unprecedented measures against Pakistan, raising the stakes in an already volatile relationship between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.
Amidst this, the visit of US Vice President JD Vance and domestic policy moves like the elevation of FTII Pune to university status add layers of complexity to the national narrative.
The Pahalgam terror attack, claimed by The Resistance Front (TRF), an offshoot of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, has been a stark reminder of the persistent threat of cross-border terrorism. The audacity of the attack, targeting civilians in the scenic Baisaran meadows, has shaken the nation and prompted a swift and resolute response from the Modi government. The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, met urgently to review the situation and rolled out a five-point action plan that signals a significant shift in India’s stance towards Pakistan. The suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) of 1960, a long-standing symbol of cooperation despite decades of conflict, is the boldest move yet. By halting the flow of 39 billion cubic metres of water annually from rivers like the Indus, Jhelum, and Chenab, India has sent a clear message: cross-border terrorism will now carry strategic costs. The closure of the Attari-Wagah border, expulsion of Pakistani military advisors, cancellation of SAARC visa exemptions, and a reduction in diplomatic staff further underscore New Delhi’s intent to isolate Pakistan until it “credibly and irrevocably” abjures terrorism.
Pakistan, predictably, has cried foul. Defence Minister Khawaja Asif accused India of attempting to “circumvent” the IWT, while Pakistan’s media has dismissed India’s claims of Islamabad’s involvement as “false,” insisting that Pakistan only supports Kashmir’s “self-determination struggle.” Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has convened a National Security Committee meeting to formulate a “tit-for-tat” response, hinting at further escalation. The deployment of Indian troops and missile systems towards the southern Pakistan border, as reported, only adds fuel to the fire, raising fears of a broader confrontation between the two nuclear powers. Former Pakistani cricketer Danish Kaneria’s scathing criticism of Sharif for “nurturing” terrorists reflects a rare voice of dissent from across the border, but it remains to be seen if such sentiments will influence Pakistan’s policy.
The political fallout within India has been equally charged. Businessman Robert Vadra, husband of Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi, stirred controversy by linking the Pahalgam attack to the BJP’s “Hindutva push,” alleging it has created a Hindu-Muslim divide that emboldens terrorists. His remarks, suggesting that the attackers were sending a “message to the PM” because Muslims feel “mistreated,” drew sharp rebuke from the BJP. MP Nishikant Dubey accused Vadra of “shielding terrorists” and demanded an apology, while the BJP questioned whether the Congress was playing a double game, with party chief Mallikarjun Kharge publicly supporting the government’s response. Vadra’s comments, echoing narratives often peddled by Pakistan, have put the Congress in a tight spot, especially as Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi cut short his US visit to attend an emergency Congress Working Committee meeting. This episode underscores the delicate balance opposition parties must strike in times of national crisis.
On the diplomatic front, US Vice President JD Vance’s visit to India, coinciding with the attack, added a layer of international solidarity. Vance, warmly welcomed by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath during a visit to the Taj Mahal with his family, condemned the attack and reiterated US support for India. His call to PM Modi and meetings in New Delhi signal a strengthening of Indo-US ties, particularly in the context of counterterrorism. World leaders, from Donald Trump to Vladimir Putin, have echoed similar sentiments, condemning the “heinous” attack and pledging support, which bolsters India’s position on the global stage.
Domestically, the government’s decision to grant university status to the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune is a welcome move, cementing its legacy as a premier institution for cinematic arts. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court’s directive to Tamil Nadu Minister Senthil Balaji, asking him to choose between his ministerial post and personal liberty in a money laundering case, highlights the judiciary’s firm stance on accountability. In the corporate world, HoABL’s foray into vertical realty with a Rs 2,500 crore investment signals confidence in India’s urban growth story, even amidst geopolitical turmoil.
As India mourns the victims of Pahalgam, with special trains arranged to bring stranded tourists home, the nation stands at a crossroads. The government’s decisive actions against Pakistan, while necessary, risk escalating tensions in an already volatile region. The challenge now is to balance deterrence with diplomacy, ensuring that the perpetrators, including alleged mastermind Saifullah Kasuri, are brought to justice without plunging South Asia into further instability. For the common Indian, the hope is for peace, security, and a future where tourist havens like Pahalgam remain symbols of beauty, not bloodshed.
