Here’s a commentary on news developments in global markets over the last 72 hours, covering equities, stock markets, indices, commodities, currencies, cryptocurrencies, fund markets, and money markets. This is based on available information and reflects key trends and events up to the current date.

  • Equities and Stock Markets / The past 72 hours have seen global equities under pressure, largely driven by escalating trade war fears stemming from U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariff policies. On March 28, U.S. markets took a hit as Wall Street ended sharply lower, with the Dow dropping over 700 points and the S&P 500 on track for its worst quarter since 2022. Tech giants like Nvidia and Tesla saw significant declines—Nvidia and Tesla each fell at least 5.5%—amid tariff uncertainty and a cooling enthusiasm for AI-driven investments, highlighted by CoreWeave’s lackluster Nasdaq debut. The tariffs on auto imports, announced via a Trump executive order, have rattled markets by threatening global supply chains, particularly in North America.

Global equity markets have exhibited increased volatility, primarily due to anticipated tariff announcements by U.S. President Donald Trump. Investors are bracing for the introduction of "reciprocal" tariffs on multiple trading partners, which has led to significant market fluctuations, particularly in equities and bonds. The technology sector has been notably impacted, with major U.S. tech companies collectively losing nearly $2 trillion in market capitalization since the beginning of the year.  In India, equity indices showed mixed performance.

On March 27, the Sensex rose 318 points to 77,606.43 and the Nifty 50 climbed 105 points to 23,591.95, buoyed by banking sector gains and foreign fund inflows despite initial declines linked to U.S. tariff news. However, by March 29, Indian equities were reported down 20% since October 2024, reflecting broader global sentiment and foreign fund outflows from markets like Mauritius and Canada. Globally, an index of shares fell on March 28 as trade war gloom outweighed positive U.S. economic
growth data. Japan’s Nikkei 225 dropped 2.09% to 37,010, and South Korea’s KOSPI 50 slid 2.1% to 2,388, signaling weakness across Asia. Canada’s TSX posted its biggest decline in three weeks, down 0.78% to 25,161, underscoring the pervasive impact of trade tensions.

In Asia, Japan’s Nikkei 225 fell 2.09% to 37,010 and South Korea’s KOSPI 50 declined 2.1% to 2,388 on March 28, mirroring the U.S. downturn. India’s markets showed resilience earlier in the period, with the Sensex gaining 318 points to 77,606.43 and the Nifty 50 up 105 points to 23,591.95 on March 27, buoyed by banking sector strength and foreign inflows. However, by March 29, reports indicated a 20% drop in Indian equities since October 2024, aligning with global pressures from U.S. tariff policies and foreign fund outflows.

  • IndicesMajor indices reflected this turbulence. The Dow Jones fell 0.37% to 42,300 and the NASDAQ dropped 0.59% to 19,799 on March 28, per posts on X. India’s GIFT NIFTY edged down slightly by 0.03% to 23,755, hinting at cautious sentiment. European markets weakened by up to 0.75%, while Australia’s ASX bucked the trend with a modest 0.26% gain to 8,029. The broad retreat in indices underscores investor unease over tariffs, inflation, and shifting economic outlooks.

  • CommoditiesCommodities showed resilience amid equity declines. Gold hit a fresh record high on March 28, with Goldman Sachs raising its forecast to $3,300, driven by strong ETF inflows and central bank demand. Gold has experienced its most substantial quarterly gain since 1986, reflecting investor movement towards safe-haven assets amid market uncertainty. The precious metal's price has increased by 17% this year. This safe-haven surge reflects market jitters over trade wars and inflation. Silver also reached new highs, aligning with precious metals’ strength. Oil prices, however, flattened as traders weighed tightening crude supplies against tariff-related demand concerns, with Brent crude’s trajectory uncertain. Coffee prices were flagged for double-digit hikes, hinting at commodity-specific pressures, though details remain sparse within this timeframe. Copper prices have surged to record levels, with benchmark U.S. copper futures rising by 28% this year. This increase is largely attributed to the looming threat of tariffs on imports, prompting suppliers and manufacturers to expedite shipments ahead of potential trade barriers.

  • Currencies / The U.S. dollar climbed, resuming its ascent on March 27 as investors awaited further tariff announcements. This strength persisted into March 28, supported by solid U.S. labor market data despite tariff and policy uncertainties. The dollar’s rise pressured other currencies, though specific movements in majors like the euro or yen weren’t detailed in the immediate 72-hour window. Posts on X noted global market weakness, suggesting currency volatility tied to equity and trade developments. The U.S. dollar has faced its weakest start to a year since the 2008 financial crisis, depreciating against several emerging market currencies. Conversely, currencies such as the Russian ruble, Polish zloty, and Czech koruna have appreciated, while the Turkish lira and Indonesian rupiah have encountered challenges.

  • CryptocurrenciesCryptocurrencies tumbled alongside equities to close the week of March 28, with no specific figures cited but a clear correlation to risk-off sentiment. Trump’s embrace of the crypto community contrasts with Democratic opposition, yet market jitters overshadowed this narrative. Trump Media & Technology Group’s 8.9% jump on March 25 after partnering with Crypto.com for “America-First” funds didn’t sustain broader crypto momentum, as tariff and inflation fears dominated. Cryptocurrency markets have remained volatile, with regulatory developments influencing investor sentiment. Notably, Japan is considering granting legal status to crypto assets as financial products, a move that could impact global crypto markets.

  • Fund MarketsGlobal equity funds saw strong inflows earlier in the week of March 28, reflecting initial optimism, but trade jitters resurfaced by week’s end, per Reuters. The IPO market struggled, with CoreWeave raising $1.5 billion but debuting weakly at $39 per share versus a $40 offer, signaling caution in tech and AI funding. In India, the IPO momentum slowed, with companies delaying listings amid equity corrections, highlighting a cautious fund market environment. Investor apprehension regarding escalating trade tensions and potential stagflation has influenced fund flows, with a noticeable shift towards assets perceived as safer, such as gold and government bonds. The Federal Reserve's response to trade uncertainties, including potential interest rate adjustments, remains a focal point for money markets.

  • Money Markets / U.S. Treasury yields climbed on March 25 after reports suggested Trump’s tariffs might be more targeted, boosting risk appetite briefly. However, by March 28, bond yields faced upward pressure again as inflation data and tariff escalation offset earlier optimism. The U.S. labor market’s resilience mitigated some concerns, but aggressive federal workforce cuts by Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency added uncertainty to money market dynamics. Specific rate movements weren’t detailed, but the interplay of tariffs and inflation kept money markets on edge.
Broader Context and OutlookThe overriding theme of the last 72 hours is uncertainty fueled by U.S. trade policy. Trump’s auto tariffs, set to expand next week, have eclipsed positive economic signals like U.S. GDP growth, driving a risk-off mood across equities, indices, and cryptocurrencies. Commodities like gold and silver shine as havens, while oil and currencies react to supply-demand tensions and dollar strength. Fund and money markets reflect a wait-and-see approach, with investors bracing for April 2’s tariff deadline—dubbed “Liberation Day”—though confidence in a clean resolution is low. Globally, markets are navigating a choppy path, balancing trade war fallout with pockets of resilience in domestic fundamentals, like India’s banking-led recovery. The next few days will likely hinge on tariff clarity and inflation cues, with volatility as the only certainty. In summary, the past three days have underscored the sensitivity of global financial markets to geopolitical events and policy decisions, with significant movements observed across equities, commodities, currencies, and other financial instruments.

Here’s an outlook commentary for world markets on Monday, March 31, 2025, covering equities, stock markets, indices, commodities, currencies, cryptocurrencies, fund markets, and money markets. This is based on trends and developments observed up to March 30, 2025, at 9:03 PM IST, with reasonable projections for the following day, given the current date and available data.

Overview / As we step into Monday, March 31, 2025, global markets are poised at a critical juncture. The dominant narrative over the past 72 hours—escalating U.S. tariff threats under President Donald Trump, coupled with mixed economic signals—continues to shape sentiment. Investors are bracing for volatility as April 2 looms, a date Trump has hinted at for further tariff announcements, dubbed “Liberation Day” by some. Yet, pockets of resilience and opportunity persist amid the uncertainty.
  • Equities and Stock Markets / Equities are likely to open Monday with cautious optimism after a turbulent end to last week. The U.S. markets, which saw the Dow drop over 700 points on March 28 due to tariff fears, may attempt a modest recovery as traders digest weekend developments. Tech stocks, particularly Nvidia and Tesla (down 5.5%+ last week), could see bargain-hunting if no new tariff bombshells emerge overnight, though the broader S&P 500’s worst quarterly performance since 2022 looms large. In Asia, Japan’s Nikkei 225 and South Korea’s KOSPI, both down over 2% on March 28, might stabilize unless U.S.-China trade rhetoric intensifies. India’s Sensex and Nifty, buoyed by banking gains last week despite a 20% yearly drop, could hold steady, supported by domestic inflows, though global risk-off sentiment may cap upside. European markets, down up to 0.75% recently, may tread water as investors weigh tariff impacts against regional growth data.

  • Indices / Global indices are in a holding pattern. The Dow (42,300) and NASDAQ (19,799) may test resistance levels if sentiment shifts, but tariff uncertainty keeps downside risks alive. India’s GIFT NIFTY at 23,755 suggests a flat-to-slightly-positive start, while Canada’s TSX (25,161) and Australia’s ASX (8,029) reflect divergent regional responses—weakness in North America versus resilience Down Under. Volatility indices like the VIX are expected to hover above average, signaling choppy trading ahead.

  • Commodities / Commodities present a bifurcated outlook. Gold, fresh off a record high last week with Goldman Sachs eyeing $3,300, should remain a focal point as a safe-haven asset, potentially gaining if tariff tensions escalate. Silver’s parallel rally could continue, though profit-taking might temper gains. Crude oil, with Brent near $74, faces headwinds from demand fears tied to trade disruptions, but supply tightness could prevent a sharp drop. Coffee, flagged for price hikes, may see speculative interest, while industrial metals like copper await clarity on global manufacturing impacts from tariffs.

  • Currencies / The U.S. dollar, bolstered by last week’s labor data and tariff-driven strength, is likely to maintain its upward trajectory into Monday, pressuring pairs like EUR/USD and USD/JPY. Emerging market currencies, including the Indian rupee, may face renewed strain if dollar dominance persists, though India’s trade talks with the U.S. (reported March 29) could offer some buffer. Currency markets will closely watch any overnight statements from Trump or Treasury officials for directional cues.

  • Cryptocurrencies / Cryptocurrencies are set for a jittery start after last week’s tumble. Bitcoin and Ethereum, caught in the risk-off wave, could see further selling pressure unless equity markets rebound. Trump’s pro-crypto stance provides a long-term tailwind, but short-term sentiment remains fragile, with traders eyeing U.S. equity futures for guidance. Any positive spin on Trump Media & Technology’s ETF plans with Crypto.com might spark localized interest, though broader market dynamics dominate.

  • Fund Markets / Fund flows are tentative as the tariff saga unfolds. Last week’s equity fund inflows (pre-March 28 sell-off) suggest appetite, but the CoreWeave IPO’s weak debut ($39 vs. $40 offer) underscores caution in tech and growth sectors. In India, IPO slowdowns reflect a wait-and-see approach, while global funds may pivot to bonds or gold ETFs if equity volatility spikes. Hedge funds could exploit tariff-driven dislocations, particularly in U.S. small caps or trade-sensitive sectors.

  • Money Markets / Money markets are on edge, with U.S. Treasury yields caught between inflation fears and growth concerns. Yields rose late last week as tariff risks outweighed labor strength, but a flight to safety could reverse this if equities falter Monday. The Fed’s next moves remain in focus, with no major data releases scheduled for March 31, leaving markets to react to news flow. In Europe, ECB signals of gradual easing may keep bond yields subdued, contrasting with U.S. dynamics.
As global financial markets approach Monday, March 31, 2025, several key factors are poised to influence various asset classes, including equities, commodities, currencies, cryptocurrencies, and money markets.

Economic Data Releases / The upcoming week will feature several critical economic indicators :
  • Tariff Updates : Any overnight statements from Trump or his team could swing markets, with April 2 as a looming deadline.

  • U.S. Futures : Pre-market signals will set the tone for equities and crypto.

  • Economic Data : While light on March 31, global PMI releases or consumer sentiment updates could influence sentiment.

  • Geopolitical Noise : Escalation in U.S.-China or U.S.-EU trade rhetoric could amplify volatility.

  • U.S. Employment Report : Scheduled for release on April 4, this report will provide insights into job growth and unemployment rates, offering a gauge of economic health amid current uncertainties.

  • Global PMI Data : Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) data for both manufacturing and services sectors will be released, shedding light on economic activity and business sentiment worldwide.
Outlook / Monday, March 31, 2025, looks like a day of guarded positioning. Equities and indices may attempt a rebound but remain vulnerable to tariff headlines. Gold and the U.S. dollar stand as likely winners in a risk-off scenario, while oil and crypto face downside risks. Fund and money markets will lean defensive, with investors parsing every signal for clues on trade policy’s next chapter. Volatility is the watchword, but selective opportunities—in resilient sectors like India’s banks or safe-haven assets—could emerge for the nimble. The world holds its breath as Trump’s trade agenda unfolds. This outlook assumes continuity from the last 72 hours’ trends, adjusted for a forward-looking perspective on March 31, 2025. Real-time developments overnight could shift the narrative significantly.
